Planning Companion

Weekly Meal Prep Calculator

Estimate how many meal portions and storage containers you may need for the week using your household size, meal-prep schedule, and ingredient budget.

Please Note: Results are planning estimates based only on the values you enter. Actual quantities, costs, serving sizes, and container needs may vary. This tool does not evaluate or recommend nutrition, caloric targets, or medical suitability.

How the Calculator Works

This calculator translates your typical household eating schedules into structured preparation figures. By isolating each variable, you can avoid both food waste and under-preparation:

  • Household Size (People): The total number of people participating in this weekly rotation.
  • Prep Horizon (Days): The number of days in the week you want to pre-prepare meals for. For example, prepping only for the busy work week (5 days) vs. the entire calendar week (7 days).
  • Meals per Person per Day: The frequency of prepared meals eaten daily by each member. For instance, prepping lunches only (1 meal) vs. prepping both lunch and dinner (2 meals).
  • Container Capacity: The size/partition style of your prep trays. Enter "1" if using individual meal boxes (one single portion), or a higher number if you prep bulk family-style containers.
  • Total Ingredient Cost: An optional field for inputting your actual grocery receipt totals to generate immediate, localized portion cost evaluations.

Formulas and Computation Principles

All computations are mathematical, linear estimates formulated from standard home kitchen management principles:

Base Portions =People × Days × Meals per Person per Day
Additional Portions Buffer =Ceil(Base Portions × Buffer Percentage / 100)
Total Portions =Base Portions + Additional Portions
Daily Portions =People × Meals per Person per Day
Containers Required =Ceil(Total Portions / Portions per Container)
Cost per Portion =Total Ingredient Cost / Total Portions
Daily Cost =Total Ingredient Cost / Days
Cost per Person =Total Ingredient Cost / People
Cost per Person per Day =Total Ingredient Cost / People / Days

Understanding Your Results

When reviewing your calculated output, please remember that one portion refers strictly to one standard pre-prepared meal serving for one individual. If you use a multi-portion food storage box (for example, a large casserole container holding 4 portions), adjusting the "Portions per Container" value ensures your container counts are accurate and match your physical kitchen cupboards.

Limitations of Calculations

Calculations generated are mathematical approximations based strictly on the parameters you enter. Real kitchen variables often deviate:

  • Portion Variations: Serving sizes naturally differ based on individual age, metabolic rate, physical activity levels, and culinary styles.
  • Ingredient price fluctuations: Seasonal costs, bulk discount differences, local butcher rates, and geographic brand premiums vary.
  • Storage variables: Container shape, freezing vs. refrigeration methods, and stacking limits may change total cupboard/freezer drawer space needs.
